ABSTRACT

Writing is a means of communicating the spoken word. Using correct spelling and being able to write using a legible, fluent script is a very important life skill. Pressures of time when working at school, university, in the workplace and elsewhere means that having a well-developed style of writing that is both legible and fast is very important – and this takes practice. To be able to write, it is essential to have good gross and fine motor skills. Good core stability, shoulder strength, fluency of movement in the wrist and ability to make a pincer movement that can be sustained over time are key skills needed before writing can take place. Most children begin to show an interest in writing between the ages of two and five years. Some children are keen to watch others write and then make their own marks on paper; others are not.
