ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 provides an overview of the idea of a “data economy.” It outlines the different participants in the new economy and the significance of government intervention to ensure a fair marketplace. The chapter looks at how technology will affect the labour market while at the same time ensuring more efficient outcomes in economic activity. It also describes the kinds of skills that populate the data science world and how such capabilities will grow with increasing data use and analytics. The chapter also lays out the structure of the book, covering the data acquisition and analytics processes in the study, and compares how big data methodologies have been applied in some other cities in Asia.
