ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 sets the stage for discussing why transportation data has been chosen in this study. It describes Singapore’s approach to creating a “Smart Nation” and the various national programmes that have been implemented. It then looks at the challenges of getting the data, curating it, and attempting to perform analytics. It shows the difficulties in integrating data obtained from public agencies such as the LTA with that from a commercial entity such as EZ-Link. While algorithms could be designed to extract and integrate key information from both sets of data, the greater concern was the different privacy provisions informing each. Public sector data, for example, is governed by the Official Secrets Act, while commercial data is governed by a non-disclosure agreement. This chapter then discusses the methodology used to drive analytics and, in particular, how different anonymisation techniques were considered and applied.
