ABSTRACT

The study and teaching of the English language arts has changed from a field that defines itself through the teaching of literature, composition, and oratory to one that instructs in the skills needed to study that content: reading, writing, listening, speaking, and critical thinking. Incorporating technology content into the English language arts teacher education program has become an uneven endeavor considering that many individuals entering the field do so to teach its more traditional content of literature, language, oratory, and composition. When integrating technology into the English language arts, it should be considered that technologies and their products forge new spaces, times, and preferred practices for learning that occurs both in and outside the classroom. Technology and the teaching of the English language arts can be sorted into two not completely exclusive groupings: open and closed technology. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
