ABSTRACT

World population in 1990 was about 5.3 billion. Approximately 77 percent of this population lived in developing countries (World Resources Institute, 1992). According to the United Nations’ population projections, world population will be 8.6 billion by the year 2025 if death rates remain constant (United Nations, 1996). Large-scale population increases will occur in poor countries of Africa, where the population is projected to nearly triple between 1990 and 2025. The population gap between developing and developed countries will thus be widened. About 84 percent of the world population will be living in developing countries by the year 2025 (World Resources Institute, 1992).
