ABSTRACT

The vocal disorders resulting from acute or chronic inflammation of the laryngeal tissues, as well as from paresis of the laryngeal muscles are the object of laryngological diagnostics and treatment; but the functional troubles which are either the natural consequence of, or have led to structural changes, can be subjected to vocal treatment. ‘Singer’s Nodules’ are the manifestation of chronic irritation of the vocal chords. This may be caused by organic factors or by functional disturbance, that is to say, misuse of the voice. Since nodules on the vocal chords are usually the result of the misuse of the vocal chords, treatment consists of resting the vocal chords, and exercises to lower the firmness of contact between, and the hypertonicity in the vocal chords. Surgical treatment is indicated if the nodule proves to be so resistant to functional influence as to render reversibility unlikely.
