ABSTRACT

The speech function is examined by listening to the speech and by observation of the movements of the patient. Further investigations will sometimes be necessary as to the anatomical state of the organs which are involved in a speech disorder, because they may also be diseased. During the first interview with a grown-up patient we can often make inquiries as to the patient’s history. If this is not possible, for reasons involved in the patient’s ailment, age, or mental state, speech therapist should do it afterwards. It is evident that therapist have got to proceed on different lines when interviewing a child or an adult patient. The interview with the parents will give therapist a reasonable amount of information, not always so exact as to satisfy us completely, but generally enough to enable us to draw the necessary conclusions.
