ABSTRACT

Learning science to progress at work is not uncommon, and many organisations provide opportunities for such professional development. The stories in this chapter, however, illustrate three very different ways in which the authors approached this task. Hugh pursued more formal sources of learning over a very long time; Ketan adapted his own preferred areas of science to better understand his role at work as a communicator of science; and Keith changed his career completely from an accountant to a gardener. In all these cases, early influences were important in deciding where and why the three story authors have ended up in scientific occupations. Mentors and role models have also played an important part in their stories. This chapter complements the wide body of literature dealing with professional development through organisational channels, describing a less explored kind of professional learning and the importance of early experiences on career-changing decisions.
