ABSTRACT

This introduction sets out the book’s core aim to examine the theory-enriched methods, practice and origins of Theatre-Rites. We offer an intimate insight into the ways in which object-theatre and object-led approaches to site-based performances that are intended for family audiences can empower, subvert and bring out the inner child in all of us.

This chapter provides a snapshot of Theatre-Rites’ philosophy to raise the profile of original devised performances for children and their carers, making an impassioned argument towards greater recognition for puppetry as a craft. It discusses the different authorial ‘voices’ interwoven through the book and offers a reader’s guide to help navigate the contents.
