ABSTRACT

In puppetry training, the movement quality of objects is often studied through exercises involving heightened acts of observation, followed by tactile explorations of the physical objects observed. This chapter illustrates the practical exercises which originate from the devising room of Mischief, but they have subsequently formed the spine of Theatre-Rites’ intensive two-day professional puppetry training workshop. Sue Buckmaster manipulates a foam tube and a performer lying next to it imitates the object’s movementSource. By puppet whispering objects we can build up characters and metaphors for them. Practical exercises in the context of Theatre-Rites’ two-day professional training workshop would always conclude with a group discussion to reflect on the individual discoveries and learning of each aspiring puppeteer.
