ABSTRACT

Fundamental political changes have led and are leading to internationalization of trade, deregulation of economic activities, and the elimination of frontiers between the European countries. In addition to the political and organizational changes, the development of the transportation infrastructure and the general technological advancement - not least in telematics - have impact on the future of the transport sector in Europe. Higher train speeds and the introduction of fast ships will also have impact on the European goods transportation. Further on, the attention to environment is getting more and more importance besides the changes in infrastructure and technology. In the near future, the most significant change in the transportation network of the Nordic countries will be the construction of a fixed land link between Sweden and Germany via Denmark.
