ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a multimodal freight transportation network model analysis of the problem of trucking regulations in Switzerland. In particular, it aims at assessing the impact of the 40 tons trucks exclusion from Switzerland on the international freight traffic through its territory. The effects of that restriction are measured on the basis of a cost minimizing analysis of transport flows between Italy and the rest of Europe. The paper focuses on the substitution effect between road and rail, and on the choice of itineraries for bypassing Switzerland. The network analysis is based on the trans-European network of roads and railways as defined by the European Conference of Ministers of Transport.
