ABSTRACT

Transportation plays a fundamental role in the organization of modern societies, given that wide and dense communication networks definitely lead towards the social and economic integration of the different countries. Though the substantial benefits that a well-developed transportation network is capable to provide to the system of human activities are highly appreciated, there is a growing awareness of the significant inconveniences which may be attributed to its considerable growth rates as registered in recent decades. Actually, economy and trade expansions encouraged by a more extensive transport system than the past determine a transport demand growth which heavily reflects in traffic congestion and air pollution.
