ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how civic education can be better conceptualised and provided based on the overall analysis of the text. It focuses on the aims and means of civic education. First, it summarises the main points of the text which pertain to the major challenges of learning to live together. Then it critically examines civic education aims, and puts forward revised model aims. Then the chapter considers means of conducting civic education from a broad view. It explores the significance of choices regarding the place of civic education in the curriculum, as a taught subject or as part of extracurricular or ‘whole-school’ education. It also reflects on the importance of the hidden curriculum, and other relevant educational and teacher practices. It then makes recommendations for how to implement civic education in line with the revised aims put forward, and discusses related implications.
