ABSTRACT

Therapists describe six categories that reflect their focus of attention when they are having an intuitive experience: (1) they pay attention to subtle cues associated with metacommunication or paralinguistic behaviors; (2) they have prophetic dreams and experience what they describe as the client’s spirit and their client’s energy; (3) they become aware of internal cognitive, affective, and somatic states; (4) they focus on the clinical relationship; (5) they are aware of the physical and social environment; and (6) their attention is drawn to the transpersonal that can follow a suspension of focus. This chapter explores how focus of attention affects the quality of intuitive impressions.
