Robbie Robertson’s reaction on that occasion was to be replicated just as strongly during Bob Dylan’s 1966 world tour, and in the British part of the tour in particular. The European part of the world tour began in late April in Sweden, in Stockholm, where the touring party met Donn Pennebaker, the American filmmaker who had directed the groundbreaking documentary Don’t Look Back, which covered Dylan’s 1965 British tour. The most overtly confrontational, and historically the most notorious, concert of the British tour was at the Manchester Free Trade Hall on May 17. After the Scottish concerts on the British tour Dylan and The Hawks played L’Olympia in Paris on May 24, Dylan’s 25th birthday, again to a generally hostile audience. The culmination of the tense and confrontational British part of Dylan’s 1966 world tour was its final concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall on May 26 and 27.
