ABSTRACT

The legal deposit system in Finland is more complicated than in most countries since it has various categories of both statutory depositories and types of material which need to be deposited. Finland has one full depository and six partial depositories. The full depository is the University of Helsinki Library, which acts as the national library. It receives one copy of each of the following types of material: printed products, newspapers, sound and image recordings, educational kits, and materials produced outside Finland. The material excluded from legal deposit includes business printings, i.e. visiting cards, forms, tickets without programmes, blank forms, sales leaflets; duplicated or copied products used in office work; Braille; imported items, audio-visual items and kits need not be deposited if less than 50 have been produced.
