ABSTRACT

Legal deposit in the Republic of Ireland is governed by the Copyright Act 1963, sect. 56. The Act stipulates that the publisher is responsible for depositing books published in the Republic. This chapter lists out different libraries that benefit from this Act. The items that are excluded are any second or subsequent editions of a book which does not contain any changes. There is provision in the Act for the Minister to issue regulations limiting the type of publications to be sent, i.e. excluding trade publications. However, no such regulation has been issued to date. The penalty for non-delivery is 20 pounds sterling plus the cost of the book. The fine is paid to the library not receiving the publication. There is no provision for collecting audio-visual material. The Library of Trinity College, Dublin is a statutory depository library for publishers in the UK. It can receive on demand one copy of everything published in the UK.
