ABSTRACT

Legal deposit in Israel is governed by two laws: the Palestine Press Ordinance 1934, chap. 116 and the Press Ordinance (Amendment) Law, no. 18 of 1953. The amendment states that the publisher, and not the printer, is responsible for depositing the publications. The Amendment specifies a list of institutions as depositories for books. Newspapers are to be deposited in the institutions, as well as with the Ministry of the Interior and the District Representative. There is no provision for audio-visual publications. Government publications are not mentioned and it is assumed that they must be covered by the Ordinance. From Israel also comes an example of a form of legal deposit in a private institution. The types of material requested include, all types of printed media, including books, pamphlets, posters, Braille literature, newsletters, postcards, board games and audio-visual items such as phonograph records, tapes, video tapes, films, slides, etc.
