ABSTRACT

Legal deposit in Thailand is based on the Press Act B.E. 2484, 1941, which is the first legal deposit law of Thailand. Section 20 of this Act stipulates that ‘the publisher shall, within seven days from the completion of the printing, deliver to the National Library two copies of the printed matter printed in the Kingdom without charging the price and the cost of delivery’. Newspapers are dealt with in section 32 of the same Act. Three copies are to be delivered to the Press Officer and two copies to the National Library of Thailand, on the day of issue, without charge by the publisher. The major exemption is mentioned in section 6, which states that printed matter belonging to the government or local governments is exempt from deposit. The penalty for failing to deliver publications is not to exceed 12 baht. The legal deposit legislation in Thailand is basically a law to control the press.
