ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the laws to better show the strengths and weaknesses of legal deposit legislation in the USA, especially where it concerns government and legal publications. The US law on legal deposit is solely for copyright registration. However, the legal deposit of government documents is subject to separate legislation. The individual states all have their own laws on the depositing of state government documents. The US government, as a matter of policy, copyright any of its publications. Therefore, the Library of Congress is dependent on statutory law to ensure receipt of government publications. The American Printing House for the Blind at Louisville, Kentucky is required to deposit one copy of every book manufactured with the Library of Congress, and a further two copies with the National Library Service for the Blind. In the USA the individual states have the own laws dealing with the legal deposit of state government publications.
