ABSTRACT

The present an Algerian law on legal deposit is a French colonial law: Decret no. 56–978 of 27 September 1956. This is a law modifying and applying to Algeria the French law on legal deposit of 1943. The printer or producer would be responsible for depositing copies with the Bibliotheque nationale, and the publisher four copies. Films are to be deposited with the Cinematheque nationale and with the Bibliotheque nationale. The present law specifies that copies are to be sent to the Bibliotheque nationale in Algiers by the publisher. The Bibliotheque in turn is supposed to send three copies to the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris. The Algerian laws, both the 1956 and the proposed, do specifically mention government documents; nor do they make any reference to the preservation of the legal deposit collection and to its access by the public.
