ABSTRACT

This book concludes that the AIIB possesses the inner potential to exercise power and influence but on the surface acting with self-restraint. Under Beijing’s leadership, the bank has accepted the established international financial arrangements. The bank’s popularity on other continents has satisfied China’s desire for enhanced international status. Positive recognition from the international community will make China less likely to direct the bank away from its current course. If this continues, the AIIB is unlikely to become an instrument in the service of China’s geopolitical ambitions. At present, China and the AIIB appear to have reached an equilibrium, but whether China’s latent ambitions will reawaken in the future remains to be seen. The dragon may not be shackled forever, especially when its becomes even stronger and aspires to having the world revolve around itself.
