ABSTRACT

This chapter finds that countries in Asia and Oceania, in general, have taken a positive and optimistic view of the emergence of the AIIB. They also demonstrate strong interest in greater cooperation with the bank. However, differences of geopolitical and geo-economic emphasis have led them to adopt distinct approaches. The AIIB is seen as a complementary institution helping to fuel enduring economic growth by almost all countries in the region. However, India is the most alert to the trajectory of the AIIB and is seeking a stronger role to prevent the bank from becoming an instrument of Chinese power. Middle-sized powers like Indonesia and Kazakhstan, on the contrary, are much less interested in the internal politics of the bank. What they care about most is being in a position to secure more funds to sustain their national economies. The countries of Oceania have very little influence within the bank. The loans or grants they obtain are the products of great power rivalry in the Pacific.
