ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 sets the stage for readers in their quest to understand canine-assisted interactions and begins by providing readers with a foundational understanding of human-animal interactions (HAIs). This includes an overview of human-animal bonding and the theories supporting HAIs. Next, an overview of the benefits of canine-assisted interventions (CAIs), including the physical, emotional, social, and educational benefits arising from interactions with therapy dogs, is provided. To clarify the varied roles that therapy dogs play in supporting human well-being, a model is introduced illustrating the Pathways to Well-Being that positions therapy dogs within canine-assisted activities, canine-assisted education, canine-assisted therapy, and canine-assisted counseling.
