ABSTRACT

The shrub Erythroxylon Coca is largely cultivated in South America especially in Peru and Bolivia. The shrub was known to and stood in high favor with the spanish conquerors of Peru; it was intimately connected with religious ceremonies. The Indians carry in their wanderings a bag of coca leaves, and also a flask of woodashes. The immoderate use of coca will cause a cachexia, exhibiting indigestion, loss of flesh and strength, mental ethical depravity, apathy to any and everything, a condition resembling very much alcoholism and morphinism. The effect of cocaine on man does not differ much from that of coca leaves. The effect of an ordinary dose of cocaine subsides gradually, so that it is difficult to determine its relative duration. Also in disturbed digestion is coca recommended; it is the oldest, best known and highest recommended corrective of digestion.
