ABSTRACT
Chapter 4 addresses the following questions: What are the historical origins of the Syria–USSR/Russia alliance? Why has Russia historically considered Syria and Iran to be its strategic allies in the region? This chapter explains how Russia has pursued its interests in the Middle East, why it sees its interests as converging with those of Iran (and China) and why it considers its continued long-term influence and presence in Syria as a core interest.
