ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the maritime ancillary sector in Turkey and thus to paint a background to the mainstream shipping activities in which most interest. Turkey displays an immature level of development in the sector despite its growing and sizeable ports and shipping interests. Costs, financial sourcing and finding resources to match costs and investments are crucial issues for all companies. Finance in shipping companies is different from finance in other industries because of the nature of the business which is considerably dictated by the need for very high investment and capital values. Financial sources for shipping in Turkey other than the capital of the company in the maritime sector consist of bank loans and shipyard credits and loans in particular, with minor credits received from public capital, public debts and private sector debts. Leasing has recently been used in maritime sector and has been a rapidly increasing method for financial sources in the sector since the middle of the 1990s.
