ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a structured framework designed to act as a reference model to which any specific leadership model may be compared and related. By using this structured core model it is possible to see how the various approaches to leadership relate to each other, leading to more rapid development of individual ability. As leaders at all levels will be in a position to assess their own performance more objectively and be able to alter their approach to leadership challenges as appropriate. The starting point when looking at the theories of leadership is defining the terms going to use. One of the most comprehensive approaches to trying to define leadership was that undertaken by Ralph Stogdill. He identified over 160 different definitions and categorized them into ten different types. More difficult to create in terms of training and development situations is the next level of leadership, the ambient leadership situation.
