ABSTRACT

The introduction discusses the importance of the topic today, giving a brief overview of the situation in America, Europe and Asia. It points to the dire importance of understanding the identity crisis and xenophobic nationalism, which present-day global migration has led to. Such questions were not the primary focus of either Jung or Freud, although each of them was quite aware of their own foreignness. More recent work on the question has often been done by people who themselves were foreigners. The author belongs to this group; she describes the personal experiences that have contributed to her feelings and views on the topic of the foreign(er). She then goes on to describe how the book is organised.
