ABSTRACT

One of the most important contributions made by feminist perspectives on work, is that in the future, the idea and meaning of the activities people call work are likely to change. Changes in the concept of work are bound to have repercussions for people’s sense of identity, and for perceptions of what their economic and social roles are. in looking at the future of work, people can identify three areas of current debate. First, if identity and work are closely linked, what might happen to people’s sense of identity once or if this important crutch has been removed? Second, if people become less preoccupied with work, what will the new balance between work and non-work activities be in the future; are we witnessing a shifting of the boundaries between work and non-work activities? Third, to what extent will consumption replace production as the primary site of people’s life activities?
