ABSTRACT
In academic writing, adjectives and adverbs perform key discourse and rhetorical functions. The types and functions of adjectives and adverbs, as well as adjective and adverb phrases, in academic writing are presented. Although adjectives and adverbs are not as numerous as nouns and verbs, adjectives are extraordinarily frequent in academic prose.
