ABSTRACT
Academic hedging (softening devices) is an important component of instruction to help L2 writers construct careful and formal written prose. The discussion is organized to begin with the lexically and grammatically simple devices and then to move on to those of greater complexity. The requirement for hedging and limiting the breadth of statements, generalizations, and claims in academic prose is not an obvious consideration for many L2 writers.
