ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines that defining politicisation is vitally important as it really forms the crux of the thesis. In terms of politicisation; psychological factors such as beliefs and attitudes are regarded as of equal importance to the more tangible factors such as participation in various political organisations. The book analyses the community of Hemsworth in terms of how it has changed since the Strike. It traces the history and origins of the community of Hemsworth and how it has grown since the pits were sunk. The book investigates whether the 1984/5 Miners’ Strike was a major politicising event. The Strike does appear to have motivated people who had never before had an interest in politics into political action. One tangible factor is the increased turnout in mining constituencies at the 1987 General Election.
