ABSTRACT
This chapter parallels Chapter 2 in that it narrates a story, or set of stories, about the inception of the multi-volume Sejarah Nasional Indonesia (SNI). It clarifies the context and the driving forces of the project and provides snapshots of the implementation of the project. It also examines the responses to the project. The overall aim is to lay the groundwork for an in-depth investigation of the context and the contents of SNI in the next chapter.
