ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the topical and unique question of how the two major Polish ports of Gdynia and Gdansk, which operate in a highly turbulent environment, use strategic management to meet present competition in its market in order not only to survive but to prosper into the 21st century. The turbulence of the environment in which the ports of Gdynia and Gdansk operate was and is caused by the transformation of Poland and other East European countries from centrally planned into free market economies. The process of transformation towards privatisation is ongoing and further changes in the strategic management system are bound to occur. For researchers with an interest in marketing, Polish ports provide a topical and fertile field for further investigation. It may be suggested that the inclusion of the third main Polish port of Szczecin-Swinoujscie in the study, would be particularly useful.
