ABSTRACT

Acting in the digital age is synthesizing media and modalities more rapidly than ever before. The specialization in discrete fields in entertainment that occurred in the mid-twentieth century was necessary and relevant at the time. Correspondingly, theatre and film programs grew apart and developed unique approaches to their respective disciplines. Accessible technology has leveled the playing field in the industry to some extent. To ensure marketability of alumni, theatre, film, TV, and digital media programs should create new approaches to actor training that transcend divisions among and between live and recorded media. Performing arts professionals are supremely qualified to understand goals, create tactics, and select the most effective strategies under given circumstances, but the given circumstances have shifted dramatically. Actors, filmmakers, and hyphenates from diverse backgrounds should be the people to tell their own tales from their own authentic cultural perspectives.
