Political Thought and the New American State: 1877–1932

This chapter focuses on the ethnic, racial, and gender-based discourse instrumental in creating a “Yankee” industrial state, comprised of many different groups. The emphasis is on the role of political thought in establishing notions of belonging, with examples covering the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882), the Spanish American War (1898), and women’s suffrage (1920).
