ABSTRACT
Many of the bereaved and survivors reacted strongly to what they perceived as red tape and bureaucratic processes, and there were several complaints about slow compensation schemes and a lack of expertise among authorities and insurance companies. Being there over time, and adjusting what one does according to changing needs, is also helpful. A special kind of bereaved are those who are also survivors of the same disaster that killed their family member. Survivors of a disaster are often described as “the lucky ones” because they did not die. Many survivors experience an undefined hierarchy of pain and suffering that tells them that their suffering is worth less than that of the bereaved. Some survivors have to live with lifelong injuries, scars or lost limbs. Some survivors think that they do not receive enough support from the government and that they do not belong or feel welcome in support groups.
