Introduction

This chapter presents a general background to the book and a landscape of the African access to medicines challenge. It contains a brief summary of the TRIPS flexibilities, the transitional arrangements in place for least developed countries and the challenges associated with the use of the existing structures, under the TRIPS Agreement, for improving access to medicines.
