ABSTRACT

The interaction between the fantastic and surrealism is an important element in Fundacio Angel Planells’ works and one that punctuates his oeuvre as a whole. Numerous works by Planells have features of the fantastic horror because of the appearance of monsters, ghosts, demons, and witches. The imprint of the gothic in surrealism can also be seen in the latter’s ‘return to a “medieval” attitude’, which, as we will see below, is certainly present in Planells’ surrealist stories. The Man with the Bent Ear evidences the importance of humour and irony in Planells’ surrealism, ultimately concentrating on events related to the ear and hearing. Space is an important parameter in the shaping of the fantastic both in Poe and Planells. Severance is extremely frequent in Planells’ surrealist paintings and drawings and affects humans, animals, statues, and even clouds, tree trunks, and columns.
