ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the scientific premises of territorial planning which are also the foundations of an ecological equilibrium between human activities and the territory or natural environment. It presents the guidelines of an urban policy inspired by the mentioned foundations of ecological equilibrium. The chapter provides the exemplification of the guidelines through their application to an actual territory, as the result of the first work of an Italian research project. It illustrates a possible way of using the results of the research, when assumed officially for the configuration of a framework of reference for territorial planning. The Quadroter was conceived, in fact, as an instrument of ‘programmatic orientation’ for any type of operation of land utilisation that at various levels of responsibility - sectorial or spatial - authorities and public bodies and also private bodies will want or will have to undertake in the future.
