ABSTRACT

Within any institution there are a variety of symbols and sources of power that can help one identify who the power players are and which units may be held in high regard. There is no formula that provides a way to calculate the level of influence, instead there are multiple indicators that help an observer or participant contextualize each institution and the power dynamics within. In any organization there are symbols of power, and many are remnants of bygone days, i.e. the corner office or office with a window, number of subordinates, size of budget, and impressive job title. One of the first symbols of power that comes to mind is an individual’s position title. No single symbol of power determines an individual’s level of power. The ability to control resources or to control others’ access to resources is an extremely important and valuable source of power in higher education.
