ABSTRACT

The Chinese toast “May you live in interesting times” has a double meaning. On one hand, it implies change and excitement; on the other, challenge. The years ahead should be a dynamic time of continued change for media professionals. Predictions are that news reporters of the future will ultimately become highly specialized independent entrepreneurs selling their knowledge-based wares directly to the public via multiple distribution outlets. The development of lightweight cameras and equipment allows “backpack journalist” to set up a camera and satellite dish, report a story and transmit it all without production crew. Computer editing stations allow reporters to type and edit copy as they screen the video, giving more reportorial control over how stories are produced. Graduates in the communication field for the next few years will be entering a rapidly changing media landscape that blends new and traditional forms of communication, an environment in which sounds, images, and information have become available whenever and wherever we like.
