ABSTRACT

Electronic documentation of patient care records has created a need to have computers in the exam room. Once the provider arrives at the exam room, a patient can expect various engagement styles, different amounts of time in the exam room, and a variety of comfort. The provider will ultimately want to understand the reason for the visit, understand medical history, conditions, medications, and then complete a physical exam to inspect specific body systems. Learning how much time a provider spends documenting while in the exam room and how that time compares to the total time spent documenting per patient will help identify how efficient the documentation process is. There are many reasons for the excess movement. Often clinics are poorly designed and, depending on room assignments, providers just have a great deal of walking to do.
