Questions to Understand the Care Team book
The care team is a mix of staff that serve the patient from before each visit, during each visit, and between visits. Care team members include physicians, mid-level providers, ancillary providers, Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses/Licensed Vocational Nurses, medical assistants, front office staff and other ancillary staff. The mix of staff and each staff member’s role varies often from clinic to clinic and specialty to specialty. Learning the composition of the care team and the responsibilities of the care team will inform how the clinic cares for its patients. Because staffing is the largest cost for clinics, the care team model will identify the overarching costs of a clinic too. Many patients prefer having one designated provider or, in Primary Care, a Primary Care Provider (PCP). Providers that only want to see assigned patients are best matched to patients that want access to one designated provider or PCP.
