ABSTRACT

Apart from the direct perpetrators of the genocide and other crimes against humanity in Indonesia millions other people supported the necropolitical New Order. They gave their consent, kept silent about what they knew, denied the violence or justified it or assisted in other ways. In this chapter two groups that played an important role in the overthrow of President Sukarno and assisted the military in its campaign to annihilate the PKI are discussed, the right-wing students and psychologists. The mass demonstrations of the students created the climate in which Sukarno was ousted as President. Muslim students, trained by a Jesuit priest, formed the core of the movement and provided its mass base. Not only students demonstrated, women, scholars and high school pupils were also mobilized to help to create a climate of chaos. The reflections of three of these demonstrators are discussed.
