ABSTRACT

The six themes of Culturally Responsive Education (CRE) don’t tell any teacher or school administrator specifically “what” to do. Rather, these six themes give context, language, and direction for how responses to behaviors, circumstances, and the tasks inherent in a wide range of teaching scenarios are best leveraged with clear and unambiguous sight of the underlying challenges and opportunities for meaningful learning experiences. The six themes discussed in this chapter are: Engagement, Rigor, Relationships, Assets, Vulnerability, and Cultural Identity. They are defined and put into relational context as a thematic model for how to conceptualize CRE.
