ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the importance of the action learning group within the PALAR process and how to establish an effective group. The focus is primarily on helping the facilitator of an action learning group understand how to create and sustain an effective space for individual and collaborative learning throughout the project. Drawing on examples from real projects, this chapter offers guidance for both personal and group learning. It explores how to cultivate listening skills, foster open sharing and learning through asking powerful questions, nurture the skill of critical reflection, identify need, support action and provide opportunity for learning. This chapter also discusses some challenges in establishing and sustaining an effective action learning group, as well as means of addressing these challenges.
