ABSTRACT

Sense of place in childhood not only contributes to the quality of a child’s life but also leaves a permanent imprint, identifying and framing the development of one’s relationship to the world. School is a place of developmental shifts, and the impact of a school in engraving childhood memory and sense of place becomes even more important in the context that today’s children spend most of their day in the school environment.

The goal of this book is to elucidate characteristics that form a sense of place in elementary school environments. Children’s favorite places in school in terms of lived experience and adults’ memory places in school will be explored. The research tracks the school environment in adults’ memories and assesses children’s schema for converting school spaces to memory places. We then investigate the degree and modes of awareness of the childhood place through the frames of the child’s developmental stages.
